Close the loop on waste

Mayor's Message

Dear resident,

There’s never been a more important time to recycle right.

Every year, Australians generate millions of tonnes of waste and much of it still ends up in landfill, damaging our environment and contributing to climate change.

But right here in Canterbury-Bankstown, we have the power to turn that around.

Councillors and staff recently visited one of Australia’s leading recycling facilities at Smithfield to see firsthand what happens to the materials you place in your yellow lid bin.

It was inspiring to learn that this facility processes more than 300,000 tonnes of material every year, including half of all household recycling in NSW, turning our bottles, cans and cardboard into valuable new products in just 24 hours.

However, the message from the experts was clear: contamination is one of the biggest challenges we face. Soft plastics, batteries, clothing and gas cylinders placed in recycling bins can jam machinery, spark fires and send whole truckloads of recyclables to landfill. Visit cb.city/RecycleMate for a full list of what goes where.

National Recycling Week, 10-16 November, reminds us that each of us plays a role and can make a real difference. By putting the right items in the right bin, you are saving natural resources and protecting our planet for future generations.

Here are simple actions you can take today:

Council is committed to supporting you with clear information and accessible services, so recycling is easier than ever. Together, we can reduce our environmental footprint and build a cleaner, more sustainable future – one bin at a time.

Regards,

Mayor Bilal El-Hayek
