Australia Day Awards

Help us say 'thanks' to our hidden heroes

What are the City of Canterbury Bankstown’s Australia Day Awards?

Every year, we recognise five people and one organisation to say thanks for their exceptional contribution, hard work and determination in serving the community.
These awards are:

  • Citizen of the Year: Recognises a resident (age 26+) of the City of Canterbury Bankstown who has made a significant contribution to the community.
  • Young Citizen of the Year: Recognises a resident (age 16-25) of the City of Canterbury Bankstown who has made a significant contribution to the community.
  • Volunteer of the Year: Recognises an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the community through voluntary efforts.
  • Community Organisation of the Year: Recognises a community organisation that has made an outstanding contribution to the local community.
  • Jack Mundey Environment and Heritage Award - Recognises an individual or group who have significantly contributed to the conservation and protection of the environment within the Canterbury-Bankstown Local Government Area.
  • Woman in the Community - Recognises women across our City for their exceptional contribution, hard work and determination in the community.

What kind of person should be nominated for an Australia Day Award?

Anyone who helps out and makes a big difference to the people around them should be nominated for an Australia Day Award.

It could be a regular volunteer at your cricket club, an outstanding local GP or an exceptional teacher.

How are winners chosen?

All nominees are reviewed and judged by the Canterbury‑Bankstown Australia Day Awards Selection Committee. Consideration is given to the scope of impact their contribution has on the local area.

Nominees must live in the Canterbury-Bankstown local government area, with the exception of Volunteer of the Year.

Self-nominations are not accepted. Council staff, Members of Parliament and members of the Australia Day Awards Selection Committee cannot be nominated.

All nominees will be contacted, and winners of each category will be invited to attend a ceremony on 26 January 2025 and presented their award by the Mayor.
