Disposal of household chemicals

Safely get rid of household chemicals at our chemical collection events, held twice a year

Find out where you can dispose of them.

The NSW Environmental Protection Agency provides these free Household Chemical Collection services for all NSW residents. This project is a Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy.

You can also drop off your old household chemicals, any time of the year, at one of the many permanent Community Recycling Centres.

If you miss Council’s Household Chemical Collections, don’t worry, there are a number of existing industry supported programs to collect left over paint, used lead-acid batteries, old medicines and other hazardous household materials.

Nitrous Oxide (NO2) cannisters cannot be placed in any household bins. They can explode and ignite, which is dangerous for your family, neighbours and your garbos.

Keep your community and Council staff safe by taking your empty unwanted NO2 cannisters to the Liverpool Community Recycling Centre (CRC) or the next Household Chemical Clean Out near you.

Click here to find out more about your local CRCs and Chemical Clean Outs. Some metal recyclers will also accept empty NO2 canister. Call ahead to check the metal recyclers requirements.

Leftover paint disposal

Visit Paintback to find a local drop-off point which will accept up to 100 litres of leftover paint, or check out the Recycling Near You website for additional leftover paint collections near you.

Battery recycling

It’s easy to find a place near you to drop off your unwanted batteries. Your local IGA, Coles, Woolworths, Bunnings and Aldi should have a battery drop off box through B-Cycle who accept most common household batteries. To find a location nearest to you click here

Medication disposal

Identify expired or old medicines lying around your house and take them to ANY local pharmacy in Australia. The national Return Unwanted Medicines program provides a convenient and safe way to collect and dispose of unwanted medicines.

Recycling motor oil

Recycle your used motor oil by placing it in an empty oil container and taking it to your local used oil collection point. Existing oil recycling collection facilities include Resource Recovery Centres, Community Recycling Centres or other resource processing facilities.
