Saturday 20 September 11am-4pm, Clarke Street, Earlwood
The countdown is over! The very first Love Earlwood – Meet you at the Plateia festival is finally here.
Head to the plateia, Greek for ‘town centre’, for a full day of live entertainment, roving performers and plenty of laughs with much-loved George Kapiniaris as MC. The main stage will be buzzing and the streets will be packed with energy!
There’ll be food stalls and trucks, free kids’ rides, face painting and much more.
It’s all happening in Earlwood this Saturday!
The festival is proudly funded by the NSW Government’s Open Streets Program 2025-28, led by Transport for NSW.
Mayor's Message
This week’s message is an important one and one with which I addressed Councillors at our last Council meeting.
Martin Luther King Jr said: “Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Those words were spoken almost sixty years ago, yet their meaning and intent have never been more relevant than today.
As you look at what is happening around our beautiful country, one cannot turn a blind eye to the growing demonstrations of hatred and ill-feeling towards people of different backgrounds.
Whether it is in our Parliament, on our streets, or across the various media and social platforms, we are witnessing growing resentment and divisiveness by a very small minority.
While some march against mass immigration, my position is very clear: I celebrate those that have come to this country. People from different cultures and faiths that have built our suburbs, strengthened our communities and contributed to our country’s future well-being.
Here in Canterbury-Bankstown, our multi-cultural fabric is made up of many people from countries like Vietnam, China, Lebanon, Greece, Bangladesh, Korea, Italy, Macedonia, Ireland and so many more.
They came here for a better life for themselves and their families.
I came to this country as a 12-year-old boy, and I am proud to tell everyone that I am an Australian-Lebanese. Like most migrants, I love this country and should never be made to feel ashamed of my culture or my heritage.
I abhor racism, and I denounce Islamophobia, antisemitism and all forms of hate speech as un-Australian.
Our Council has long been committed to programs and awareness campaigns aimed at stamping out racism. But there is always room to improve, we must do more. Hate has no place here. Unity and love always will.
Regards,
Mayor Bilal El-Hayek
Children and Youth Awards 2025 – nominations open
Do you know a child or young person who inspires others or makes a meaningful difference in our community?
Our Children and Youth Awards recognise their achievements across nine categories – from leadership and inspiration to sport and community involvement.
The awards are open to children in years 3-6 and young people in years 7-12 in Canterbury-Bankstown.
Nominate someone you know by Sunday 5 October.
Put your cigarette butt in the bin
Flicking a cigarette butt onto the street may seem insignificant, but did you know it happens with 64% of cigarettes in NSW.
Those butts often wash into our rivers, leaching harmful toxins into precious waterways. So, don’t be a pain in the ash – place your cigarette butt in the bin to help keep our rivers clean and our community healthy.
Have Your Say
Have your say on Tasker Park precinct upgrades
We’re planning exciting upgrades for a world-class recreation precinct in Canterbury. Read the draft plans and share your feedback online or join us at a pop-up session on Saturday 27 September or Wednesday 15 October.
How’s your local park?
We’ve had a great response to our survey about local parks, so we’re keeping the survey open for a little longer. Share your thoughts on how we care for smaller neighbourhood parks, from mowing and bins to garden upkeep. Take the quick survey by Wednesday 1 October.
