CBCity to be 100% powered by the sun
All Council facilities and streetlights in Canterbury-Bankstown will now be powered by solar energy.The City of Canterbury Bankstown (CBCity) has finalised a new contract with Australian solar provider, ZEN Energy, which will increase Council’s renewable energy supply from 20 per cent to 100 per cent.The renewable energy will be supplied from solar farms in Moree, Hillston and Nevertire.Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said this was a massive achievement for Council.“It means that when a resident uses our libraries, pools, sportsgrounds, community halls, or any other Council building, they are using a facility that is powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity,”

Local Swim School breeds champions
A group of elite swimmers who train at Canterbury-Bankstown’s Leisure and Aquatic Centres have dominated in the pool across the country.The Harlee Elite squad members brought home 25 medals at the recent State NSW Summer Championships.And now the call has gone out for more locals to join the CBSwim program, which is proving to be a breeding ground for future swimming champions.Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said our program has been preparing young stars since 2011.“This is a fantastic opportunity for parents to enrol their children in CBSwim School to teach them basic water skills and you never know, it could lead to bigger and better things,”

CBCity's Innovative Sustainability Programs acknowledged
The City of Canterbury Bankstown has been acknowledged at Keep Australia Beautiful’s 2021 Sustainable Cities Awards.Council was highly commended in the Recycled Organics Award and Community Spirit and Inclusion Award categories and was a finalist in the Overall Sustainable Cities Award.Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said this was a great achievement for not only Council, but the whole community.“Being recognised for our pioneering programs is extremely reassuring and proves that we are on the right track to be an even more sustainable City,”

For local artist, Kim Chau, CBCity’s Bushcare program is more than just an opportunity to give back to the local community, it inspires her artistic genius.The Birrong local first volunteered for Bushcare during her studies in Natural History Illustration to find inspiration for her botanical masterpieces.But volunteering for Bushcare taught Ms Chau more than she could ever learn from a textbook.“Bushcare allowed me to observe the parts of flowers, plants and insects that I would only read about in textbooks.
