Upgrades make for a safer walk to school

Seventeen pedestrian crossings and footpaths across Canterbury-Bankstown are being upgraded to provide safer conditions for children, parents and commuters alike.

Seventeen pedestrian crossings and footpaths across Canterbury-Bankstown are being upgraded to provide safer conditions for children, parents and commuters alike.

Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said safety is one of Council’s top priorities and these projects will ensure children are not put at greater risk when walking around the City.

“More than 58,000 children go to school across Canterbury-Bankstown every day and we need to make sure they are dropped off and picked up safely,” Mayor El-Hayek said.

“With more upgrades to be completed in 2024, we’re going to see considerable improvements in the safety of children going to and from school in Canterbury-Bankstown.”

The pedestrian crossings and footpaths being upgraded are:

  • Penshurst Road, Narwee – Raising the existing pedestrian crossing and upgrading street lighting;
  • Yanderra Street, Condell Park – Constructing a new footpath;
  • Church Street, Canterbury – Constructing a new raised pedestrian crossing near Canterbury Girls High School;
  • Princess Street, Canterbury – Raising pedestrian refuge island;
  • Miller Street, Kingsgrove – Raising children’s crossing near Clemton Park Public School;
  • Brunker Road, Yagoona – Constructing a new pedestrian refuge island at intersection with Rowe Drive;
  • Amaroo Avenue, Georges Hall – Constructing a new footpath;
  • Howard Road, Padstow – Upgrading existing pedestrian refuge island near Faraday Road;
  • Shellcote Road, Greenacre – Constructing a new raised pedestrian crossing near Greenacre Christian College;
  • Raymond Street, Bankstown – Constructing a new raised pedestrian crossing at West Terrace;
  • Karool Avenue, Earlwood – Designs for a footbridge over the Cooks River;
  • Bayview Avenue, Earlwood – Constructing a new pedestrian refuge island;
  • Foley Street, Georges Hall – Constructing a new footpath;
  • Marks Street, Chester Hill – Constructing a new footpath;
  • Powell Street, Yagoona – Constructing a new footpath;
  • Fore Street, Earlwood – Constructing a shared pedestrian and bike crossing; and
  • Wardell Road, Earlwood – Constructing a shared pedestrian and bike crossing.

These projects were proudly funded by the NSW Government under its Get NSW Active program.

The City of Canterbury Bankstown has also partnered with NSW Police Highway Patrol, to promote school zone safety. As part of the campaign, signage has been made available to all schools in Canterbury-Bankstown highlighting the penalties of common school zone offences.
