Child safety is on top of the priority list for the City of Canterbury Bankstown, and Council is making it easier than ever for parents to keep their kids safe on the road.

Council is continuing to encourage parents to practise safe road behaviour following National Road Safety Week and is offering FREE child restraint fitting services in Bass Hill and Campsie locations throughout the year.

The Child Restraint Fitting Service has been operating by Council for more than 20 years, offering parents an opportunity to have professional seat fitters secure child restraints to their vehicle.

The service also ensures seats meet the legal safety requirements to keep little ones protected.

Authorised seat fitters can also provide parents with advice on how to keep their children safe while they are driving.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek recently attended the National Road Safety Week child seat fitting session, which was held in conjunction with Kidsafe and Transurban, and said the service is a great way to keep the kids safe while also giving parents peace of mind.

"Most seats are fitted or used incorrectly, which can cause serious harm to babies and small children,” Mayor El-Hayek said.

“It is a legal requirement that all children are safely fastened into the correct child car seat for their age and size.

“With the current cost of living, it was important that we made these fittings a free service to ensure every child is safe on the road and our residents are following the law.

“Having a professionally fit child safety seat provides protection and gives parents a sound mind knowing that their child is secure in the backseat.”

This National Road Safety Week, Council’s Child Restraint Fitting Service fitted 65 seats in 49 vehicles.

The next Child Restraint Fitting will be held at Bass Hill on Thursday 6 June.
