Building Better Bin Bays Program

Find out how to upgrade the bin rooms at your apartment complex.

Does your building have insufficient space for bins and waste storage? You may be eligible to receive a Council rebate to upgrade your facilities and improve waste management for your block.

What’s the rebate for?

Council and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) are offering rebates of up $10,000 under our Building Better Bin Bays Program. Funds are available to apartment buildings to improve the functionality and safety of their waste storage areas.

By upgrading bin bays, buildings can:

  • Reduce litter and illegal dumping
  • Improve safety and accessibility to bins
  • Make recycling easier and more efficient
  • Create a more attractive street frontage by concealing bins

What’s on offer?

Eligible buildings can apply for a rebate of up to $10,000*.

Rebates can be used to assist in covering the costs of:
•    Completing a Development Application (DA)
•    Demolition of previous waste infrastructure
•    The construction of new DA approved waste storage areas

*The rebate will not cover costs exceeding $10,000. If the full amount is not spent, the unused portion of the rebate will not be issued.

Who can apply?

  • Apartment blocks with communal external waste storage areas, or where an absence of infrastructure results in bins being stored on driveways or grass
  • Buildings approved prior to 2012
  • Either a Strata or Community Title properties; build to rent, boarding houses or other single private owner properties are ineligible
  • Preference will be given to smaller buildings where the financial burden of improvement works per unit is more significant

How to apply

  • Meet with your Strata committee or speak with your neighbours and Strata Manager. Decide if your building’s bin bay is in need of improvement.
  • Council will also be targeting pre-identified buildings with challenging waste storage spaces.
  • Buildings with an identified need are to complete an Expression of Interest to Council. Council will review the applications to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria.
  • If all eligibility criteria is met, the Strata Plan and Council will enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the rebate of up to $10,000.
  • Following our guide How to Upgrade Your Bin Bay and Canterbury Bankstown Development Controls, Strata Plan’s will complete the necessary steps to submit a DA for approval.
  • NOTE: Removing, upgrading or adding to waste infrastructure without an approved DA is illegal development.
  • Buildings are to complete works for their approved bin bay designs within 12 months of the approved DA.
  • Following completion of work as per the development approval and provision of receipts, Council will process the payment of up to $10,000 through our rebate partner Rebate.ly.
