City of Canterbury Bankstown is calling on the community to nominate an unsung hero for its annual Australia Day Awards.
The 2025 Australia Day Awards will shine a spotlight on outstanding individuals and organisations for their contributions, hard work and determination in serving the community.
Nominations are open until Friday 29 November across six categories:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Volunteer of the Year
- Community Organisation of the Year
- Jack Mundey Environment and Heritage Award
- Woman in the Community
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek encouraged the community to recognise those who often fly under the radar.
“As the year comes to an end, it’s time to stop and reflect on those who have gone out of their way to make a difference,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“We’re looking for selfless local heroes who don’t seek recognition or fame, but leave enormous positive impacts on our lives by creating a great place we all love.
“It could be a volunteer at your local sports club, a carer of the elderly and disabled, a community leader, or even a mentor and role model.”
Last year’s Citizen of the Year Award went to Reverend Gaby Kobrossi, who dedicates his time to volunteering and serving as a minister at Bankstown District Uniting Church.
Reverend Kobrossi said he and his church community have been supporting asylum seekers and refugees with training opportunities, bus trips and help to find accommodation since the war started in the Middle East in 2011.
“During COVID, we opened our doors to provide food and meals to people in need,” he said. “And this year, we’ve been helping people coming from Gaza and Lebanon.”
Reverend Kobrossi added that it had been a particularly tough year for the community, and it was important to acknowledge those who had put their hand up to help.
Mayor El-Hayek said in all that this world, and our citizens, have endured this year, he looked forward to the joy of reviewing the stories of these unsung heroes.
All nominations are reviewed and judged by the Canterbury‑Bankstown Australia Day Awards Selection Committee and consideration is given to the scope of impact their contribution has had on the local area.
