People with disability

People with disability are active and valued in our community. We are improving accessibility and creating opportunities for employment and economic participation in liveable communities.

Disability resources

The Inclusion and Awareness guide is a resource developed by Canterbury-Bankstown Council in consultation with The Canterbury-Bankstown Council Universal Access Advisory Group to provide a friendly user guide to our community about disability and inclusion.

Zero Barriers is an initiative created by The Multicultural Network, who are now delivering the project in Canterbury-Bankstown.

They aim to increase accessibility to businesses, services and community groups for people with a disability. Zero Barriers provides support and guidance to businesses, services and groups, helping them address barriers that prevent people with a disability from shopping, participating or using a service like everyone else.

They are not only supporting businesses, services and groups but we're also creating a platform for a disability-friendly community, encouraging Canterbury-Bankstown to become one of the most inclusive communities in Australia.

They make these businesses, services and groups visible in the community by awarding them the Zero Barriers Logo that encourages people with a disability to shop, access or use the business or organisation displaying it.

We have created an Accessibility Guide that provides hints and tips to becoming more inclusive and includes a self-assessment.

We also recognise and promote businesses and organisations that make an effort to eliminate barriers for people with disabilities through the Zero Barriers directory.

If you want a Zero Barriers sticker to display at your business, then complete the self-assessment online.

Disability awareness for businesses is important out of respect for our fellow community members who may have mixed abilities and mobility.

It also makes business sense to educate yourself on these issues – after all, improved access improves business!

Don't miss business

"Missed Business" results from poor design, business premises access and can limit customers from engaging with your business. Design features which alienate shoppers, particularly those with a disability or who are elderly, often force them to go elsewhere.

Make shopping easier with:

  • Wide aisles
  • Lower counters
  • Less clutter
  • Accessible ramps
  • Language aids

This makes premises more inviting and provide a more pleasurable shopping experience. Our population is ageing, so let's make our shops inviting for all!

"Section 23 of the Disability Discrimination Act makes it unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of disability in providing access to or use of premises that the public can enter or use.  Building access issues also arise under other DDA provisions including in relation to employment, access to services, and accommodation. The Australian Human Rights Commission has made issues about access to premises one of its major disability rights projects."
Excerpt: http://www.hreoc.gov.au/disability_rights/buildings/access_to_premises.html

What does this mean?

As of May 2011, new buildings or new parts of existing buildings that are being renovated will be subject to the Premises Standards which ensure fair access considerations for those with disabilities.
