Bird flu
Bird Flu (Avian Influenza H5N1) is a highly contagious and deadly disease affecting wild birds and mammals, poultry, pets and, in rare cases, humans. The virus has led to extensive loss of domestic and wild birdlife in Australia and other parts of the world.
What should you do if you suspect avian influenza?
Symptoms in birds can include lack of coordination, tremors, swimming in circles, abnormal posture, inability to stand or fly, difficulty breathing, swelling around the head, neck and eyes, and sudden death.
Be alert for groups or clusters of five or more sick or dead birds.
In our local government area, the types of birds at higher risk include waterbirds, seabirds, shorebirds and backyard poultry.
If you suspect avian influenza:
- AVOID contact and keep pets and children well clear.
- RECORD time, date and location and other evidence including photos and video
- REPORT the sick wildlife to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline by phone on 1800 675 888 or online
Birds in public spaces
Where a sick or dead bird is located in a public space (park, sports field, playground, etc) and is suspected to be because of avian influenza, do not touch the bird.
Take a photo, if possible, note the location and call the hotline above.

City of Canterbury Bankstown is not the authority on managing the H5 Bird Flu outbreak, including matters relating to biosecurity and health.
This response is led by NSW Department of Primary Industries and other relevant government agencies. Council will continue to:
- Monitor official advice
- Support government communications where needed
- Provide local operational updates if any Council services are affected
