Taboos lifted in gut art exhibition

Plumbing parts from Bankstown, water from across Sydney and a special Kombucha brew will form part of a playful and provocative new FREE art exhibition about the human gut and digestion journeys.

Bankstown Arts Centre’s latest exhibition, Gut Waters, will open on Saturday 26 July and features the works of six artists, including two new commissions unlike anything most people will have seen before.

The exhibition features work from Australian and international artists, including one that is uniquely about the Bankstown area, created by Eugenia Lim in collaboration with a local plumber and gas fitter Jonni Te Waa.

Gut Waters’ lead curator, Dr Vanessa Bartlett, said Ms Te Waa, in collaboration with Victorian artist Eugenia Lim, worked to create a unique new artwork which includes pipes that have come from Bankstown plumbing jobs.

“Jonni and Eugenia used copper pipes to make a beautiful and intricate fountain. They are twisted into the shape of a gut,” Dr Bartlett said.

“In the fountain is a special brew which is mainly based on Kombucha in consultation with Sydney microbiologist Lucien Alperstein. Eugenia has used water from different rivers around Bankstown to make that brew and she has also collected ocean water from Manly, which is near where Bankstown’s wastewater flows into the Pacific Ocean.”

Dr Bartlett said the second new artwork to be unveiled at the exhibition would be a creation by Helen Pynor aimed to reducing stigma around gut health and taboos.

“There will be an opportunity to learn about the science of gut health; it’s not just about this being disgusting and frivolous; there’s a learning opportunity here,” Dr Bartlett said.

The FREE Gut Waters exhibition runs until 6 September with a suite of Saturday public program events that will be announced shortly.  Gut Waters has been made possible with support from Create NSW.
