Improving safety around our schools and urging drivers to slow down is a priority of the City of Canterbury Bankstown.
According to recent statistics from Transport for NSW, there have been 40 road related deaths reported across the state, less than 50 days into 2025.
Council is investing in projects across our City and have recently completed significant upgrades outside Greenacre Christian College on Shellcote Road.
The upgrades include a new roundabout, speed hump and raised pedestrian crossing aimed at improving traffic flow and making the school run safer for parents and students.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said while Council is working hard to make local roads safer, it is up to drivers to slow down and follow the rules.
“The horrible truth is that despite the shocking statistics, drivers continue to speed,” he said.
“More than 58,000 children go to school across our City, and Council is dedicated to making sure every one of them feels safe on their way there, and their way home,
“But it is up to all of us to play our part, follow the road rules and drive safely.”
Greenacre Christian College principal Susan Kusch said the school is “extremely pleased with the upgrades” and “are grateful for the positive impact they will have on the school community.”
“Although the roundabout has only recently opened, we are already noticing a positive impact on traffic flow and safety at the intersection of Waterloo and Shellcote Road,” principal Kusch said.
“The speed hump and raised pedestrian crossing on Shellcote Road outside the school have effectively helped moderate drivers' speeds and raised awareness of the presence of school children in the area.
“Greenacre Christian College is deeply committed to the safety and wellbeing of our students and families, and these enhancements show that our Council values safety and wellbeing too.”
Mayor El-Hayek said the upgrades around the school are a welcome change that will improve safety in the high pedestrian and traffic area.
“Council’s goal for the traffic upgrades on Shellcote Road, Greenacre was to improve students’ safety by reducing drivers speed and providing better traffic flow around the school,” he said.
“We are glad to hear these changes are already having an impact.”
Principal Kusch added that while the school is thankful for the upgrades, we all have a part to play in keeping students safe.
“We are truly grateful to the Council for engaging with us and investing in measures that improve safety of our students in the surrounding areas,” she said.
“We ask all drivers to help us protect our students by driving attentively, adhering to safe speeds, stopping at crossings, and following all road rules. Together, we can ensure that our students remain safe both inside and outside our school gates.”
Upgrades to Shellcote Road, Greenacre were proudly funded by the NSW Government under its Get NSW Active program.
