City of Canterbury Bankstown is on the hunt for local sporting legends to induct into the rejuvenated Bankstown Sporting Hall of Fame.
City of Canterbury Bankstown is on the hunt for local sporting legends to induct into the rejuvenated Bankstown Sporting Hall of Fame.
Council will induct new athletes to the Hall of Fame for the first time in over a decade, following a Council motion passed last November, and is calling on the community to nominate locals whose sporting achievements are worthy of recognition.
The Bankstown Sporting Hall of Fame acknowledges and honours members of the Bankstown community for their outstanding sporting achievements.
It was established at Bankstown Sports Club in 1988 and relocated to the Centre of Excellence at Bankstown Memorial Park in 2013.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said the Hall of Fame gives an incredible insight into the City’s greatest sporting icons.
“We must keep this tradition alive and continue to recognise those who have achieved great things in the sporting arena,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“New inductees will join an elite group of sporting legends including the Waugh brothers, Steve Mortimer, Billy ‘The Kid’ Dib and many more.
“To be included in the hall of fame is an extremely fitting form of recognition.”
Nominations are open for athlete members who were born or lived in the Bankstown area and represented Australia in a competitive sport and open age division.
Mayor El-Hayek said you can nominate any athlete who you think is worthy.
“It could be someone you know, or someone whose career you have followed. Maybe it’s your sporting childhood hero, the sportsperson you have loved watching on TV, or a friend or relative who has excelled in a sport that doesn’t get the media coverage you think it deserves.”
Associate members who were born or lived in the Bankstown area and coached or administrated a competitive sport and open age division can also be nominated.
Nominations for the Bankstown Sporting Hall of Fame close on Friday 28 June.
