New year, new you! Smash your fitness resolutions with City of Canterbury Bankstown’s first running festival!
Council is calling on serious competitors, casual runners, walkers and families to register for I RUN with Active CB Festival on Sunday 16 March at Mirambeena Regional Park, Georges Hall.
The festival caters for all ages and abilities, with 3km, 7km, 14km and 21.1km events. Each course follows the banks of the Georges River and around Lake Gillawarna.
19-year-old Nathan Trinh runs the trails every Saturday Morning with the Western Districts Joggers and Harriers Club and said the feeling of finishing a run is unmatched.
The Chester Hill resident joined the local running club in 2016 and has gone on to compete in many races and has covered his fair share of kilometers.
“The competitive yet friendly aspect of the club got me hooked onto running,” Trinh said.
“Running with the club is a good way to practice for my bigger races and how I approach things – you can try out different distances and race strategies and I love the social aspect!”
Most recently, Trinh competed in a 100km Ultra Trail Australia Race through the Blue Mountains, which took him 18 hours to complete. Last year, he finished first in his age group at a similar event held in the Snowy Mountains and is ranked 80th in the City 2 Surf.
Trinh encouraged other locals to give running a go and shared his top tips to getting started:
- Get a nice pair of running shoes – Visit any sports store and find the shoes that look the coolest as these will motivate you to go out and use them.
- Aim to run a run set or distance per week – it could be as small as ten minutes or 3kms. You’ll pick up the amount of runs you do and the kilometers with time!
- Join a running club – make friends and give yourself some healthy competition. Running doesn’t have to be all that hard if you have someone next to you.
- Sign up for an event – always wanting to improve on my times gives me inspiration to get training for my next race.
- Connect with people you know that run – runners are amazingly friendly and they can give you the best tips to improve.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor El-Hayek said I Run with Active CB is a fantastic place to start chipping away at the new year’s resolutions.
“This running festival is an exciting first for our City and I encourage everyone to lace up their joggers and join us in reaching our fitness goals together,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
There will be $200 gift cards for the best dressed male, female and child under 16 in the Harmony Run.
There will also be prizes for male and female first, second and third place finishers. Plus, every finisher will take home a medal and a cooling towel.
The I Run with Active CB courses have well-defined pathways, clearly marked and some challenging hills to keep you honest. There will be drink stations along the way to stay hydrated.
