Community members can take a trip back in time and experience what it was like for our First Australians living in Canterbury-Bankstown all those years ago.
During NAIDOC Week celebrations, an interactive cultural heritage survival game which was developed by acclaimed artist Brett Leavy, will include visual replicas of pre-settlement campsites, fishing spots and other areas of significance across the Darug nation.
The game is just one of many attractions which will be at City of Canterbury Bankstown’s annual NAIDOC Family Fun Day, which will be held at Paul Keating Park in Bankstown on Saturday 5 July from 10am to 3pm.
“People will be able to scan a QR code and take part in the game which is based on the knowledge, stories, connections of First Nations people and sites of significance to them,” Mr Leavy said.
“They can also give feedback and share more knowledge to help develop future iterations of the game.”
Mayor of Canterbury-Bankstown, Bilal El-Hayek, said the game was one part of a large line up of activities would celebrate local history and culture.
“I’m looking forward to the Family Fun Day and encourage everyone in our community to head down to Paul Keating Park and be part of the celebration,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
The FREE, family-friendly event will feature:
- Live performances by First Nations artists including The Donovans, Jannawi Dance Clan, Torres Strait Islander dancers and Josh Sly (Murruwa).
- Cultural workshops, games, artefact displays and traditional dance performances
- Kids’ activities, face painting, rides and an Australian wildlife display
- A visit from the Kinchela Boys Home healing and truth-telling bus
- A FREE community BBQ and market stalls
In addition to the Family Fun Day, Council is hosting two FREE special NAIDOC-themed screenings of the popular films Rabbit Proof Fence and Windcatcher. The Salvation Army will also host a NAIDOC Day event in Villawood on Wednesday 16 July.
The 2025 NAIDOC Week theme, ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy’, celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.
