A local business owner who brazenly dumped 25 pallets of expired food has been slapped with a hefty fine by City of Canterbury Bankstown.
The business owner was allegedly spotted driving a forklift with the pallets of out-of-date food and dumping them on the roadway outside an industrial complex at Villawood.
Council issued the man with a clean-up notice and gave him 72 hours to remove it.
The pallets containing expired jars of pickles, dried fruits, bags of chips and smashed containers of hummus were strewn across the roadway, attracting vermin and Ibis’.
After failing to comply with the clean-up notice, Council then issued a total of $45,000 in fines, including transporting waste to an unlawful waste facility and not complying with requirements for information.
Council was left to clean up the mess at a considerable cost, which required two trucks and six staff members.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said he was appalled by the actions of the business owner.
“He had no shame, dumping his waste in broad daylight for everyone on the street to see,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“We will not tolerate people who treat our streets like a tip.”
Mayor El-Hayek applauded the community members who tipped Council off and assisted in the investigation.
“Our staff do a fantastic job, but they cannot be everywhere at all times. We also rely on the community to be our eyes and ears.
“If you see anyone dumping rubbish, please report them to Council so we can put an end to this disgusting behaviour.”
