The Lebanese Film Festival (LFF) 12th Edition will launch in Bankstown this week, thanks to City of Canterbury Bankstown’s annual Event Partnership Program.

The festival brings the best of Lebanese cinema to Australian audiences and is just one of the many events showcasing the vibrant cultural tapestry of Canterbury-Bankstown featured on the City’s new visitor website, Where Interesting Happens.

The Lebanese Film Festival 2024 will kick off this Thursday 15 August at the Bryan Brown Theatre, Bankstown, with an exquisite evening that will transport audiences straight to the heart of Beirut.

And on Saturday 24 August, a full day of free short film and documentary screenings at Bankstown Arts Centre will inspire minds with a unique glimpse into contemporary Lebanese filmmaking, while fulfilling bellies with a big Lebanese barbeque.

LFF Co-Director Jessica Zeait said this year’s program will shed a new light on Lebanon and reflect different perspectives on its challenges.

“This year’s films delve deep into Lebanon’s pains, celebrations and perseverance, reflecting the heart and soul of the country,” Ms Zeait said.

“We we’re taken aback by the resilience and determination of Lebanon’s film industry.”

The first ever LFF debuted in Bankstown in 2012 and was viewed by around 900 people. The festival has since grown into the world’s largest festival of its kind, attracting thousands.

To date, the volunteer-led festival has screened more than 300 films, either filmed or based in Lebanon or made by Lebanese filmmakers, to more than 45,000 Australians.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said the festival is a fantastic celebration of one of our City’s largest communities.

“I encourage everyone to support the Lebanese Film Festival, be entertained and learn more about the wonderful Lebanese culture, traditions and people.”

City of Canterbury Bankstown’s 2024/25 Event Partnership Program offers funding and additional support to events which have the potential to grow into major annual events in the City.

At the Council Meeting in July 2024, Council resolved to support the festival with a contribution of $23,000.
