Fire safety

Fire safety is important to ensure the safety of the lives of the people who live, work and visit our City.

In an emergency always call 000

Fire safety upgrading of buildings

Many buildings were erected long before the introduction of current building standards and, as a result, are a fire safety risk. Council conducts inspections to ensure buildings are safe. When buildings upgrade, there's a process involved to minimise risk. In addition to other measures; hose reels, hydrants, exit signs, portable fire extinguishers and smoke alarms must be made available, and must meet relevant maintenance standards.

Council issues orders, which you are responsible for in order to adhere to fire safety laws, although you can resolve any queries or issues with us if you dispute any aspect of the required work.

Smoke alarms in your home

Smoke alarms save lives! Many people die needlessly each year in fires at home.

The effectiveness of smoke alarms has been proven on many occasions, and they are inexpensive and easy to install. It is a legal requirement to have at least one alarm on each level of your home, without exception.

Fire and Rescue NSW can give you more information about the law, as well as the installation and maintenance of these devices.

In an emergency always call 000.
