Investing in Canterbury town centre

The Canterbury Town Centre upgrade, including an improved and realigned intersection and upgraded shared path underpass under Canterbury Road, is now complete.

The underpass was officially opened in on 20 December 2024 by Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek with NSW Minister for Transport Jo Haylen and NSW Member for Canterbury Sophie Cotsis.

You can find more details on the completed project below.

Other works happening in Canterbury include the construction of the brand-new Canterbury Leisure & Aquatic Centre and the rejuvenation of Tasker Park.

Underpass shared-use path

The underpass, which is a vital link in the Cooks River path and cycleway, has been transformed.

The upgrades include greater clearance between the ground and the bridge and a widened path. New lighting has been installed and a stormwater drainage diversion established to prevent flooding. The adjacent ramp and podium were also upgraded to connect the path to the road above.

The $9 million project was delivered in partnership with City of Canterbury Bankstown and Transport for NSW’s Get NSW Active program, with grant funding of more than $3.5 million.

New traffic signals

The Canterbury Town Centre intersection upgrade is now complete.

New traffic signals have been installed and the diagrams below show the new traffic arrangements at the intersection. You will find explanations below each diagram.

  • Use the right lane to go straight across into Charles Street
  • Use the left  lane to turn onto Canterbury Road

Overview of project

The project includes:

  • Realignment of Canterbury Road, Close Street and Charles Street intersection to facilitate new traffic signals
  • A slip lane from northbound Canterbury Road to Charles Street for safer turning from Canterbury Road onto Charles St
  • Construction of dedicated right-hand turning lane from southbound Canterbury Road to Charles Street, a left turning lane from Close Street to Canterbury Road, and a right turning lane from Charles Street to Canterbury Road
  • New streetlights and paved footpaths for the safety of pedestrians
  • Undergrounding of overhead power lines
  • Upgrade of the Canterbury Road shared path underpass which falls along the Cooks River cycleway, this includes lowering and widening the path and installing lights. Adding convenience and increased foot and bike capacity to the shared path.

The intersection upgrades are essential for the safety of vehicles and pedestrians. The improvements will make turning at the intersection safer for vehicles and crossing the road easier for pedestrians.

The shared path underpass upgrade will improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists using the Cooks River cycleway. The upgrade will provide greater clearance from the bridge and ample space for pedestrians and cyclists to use the path at the same time. During the upgrade, the underpass will remain closed and Council recommends cyclists use the detour route on the map below.
