Rates across the City are being reviewed and are proposed to change from July 2021.
Council’s aims to address the current rates imbalance and bring about fairness and equity for all ratepayers, as well as balance the future needs of the community and maintaining the financial health and stability of Council.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said one important change will be a rates harmonisation (or equalisation).
“You may not be aware, but currently home owners pay different rates depending on where they live in the City,” Mayor Asfour said.
“We all share the parks, the pools, the libraries and the roads, so it is only fair we all contribute equally to the cost of these facilities.”
The harmonisation will affect every ratepayer and is a requirement of the NSW Government.
Council’s number one priority is to ensure every ratepayer gets value for their dollar and that their money is invested in the City.
“The community told us they want a modern and clean City,” Mayor Asfour said.
“Things like improving town centres, cleaning streets, parks and waterways, improving aquatics facilities and creating more recreational and family-friendly spaces.”
As the City grows, those demands will be even greater, and Council will need to invest even more to deliver modern services and infrastructure. To do this, Council is also seeking an extra $40 million per year, through a Special Rate Variation.
Last week’s Council Meeting, Council resolved to begin community consultation on 1 December, ensuring everyone will be made aware of the proposed new structure and have their say. This will include:
- An information pack delivered to all business and residential ratepayers;
- A number of information sessions - both in person and online;
- Dedicated rates phone number; and
- Comprehensive information available on our website, including translated materials.
“Once the consultation period is over, Council will consider all of your feedback,” Mayor Asfour said.
“This will be the basis to help us deliver a fair and equitable rating system for everyone.”
