A range of new initiatives at Bankstown Arts Centre will help shape the next generation of Canterbury-Bankstown artists.

The exciting program will help give local youths an edge in the industry by covering topics like:

How to create a video artworks on smartphones;
Minimising incidents of graffiti vandalism, through street art workshops; and
Showcase the talents of local solo and group artists aged 15-25.

Mayor Khal Asfour said Canterbury-Bankstown is a destination for young artists of all disciplines, where they can create and exhibit their work, develop their skills and inspire creativity among our residents.

“Our City is home to a culturally rich and diverse community that is eager to participate in and engage with the arts,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Council delivers a diverse range of programs and activities, ensuring our young people have access to a wide range of opportunities to develop their artistry.

“Whether you are an artist, part of the audience or a volunteer, I encourage you to get involved in our vibrant arts scene.”

One of the programs invites young women to participate in an intensive six-week program, called Zoom Lens, where they will work collaboratively and independently to create a video artwork or short film using their smartphones.

Funded by the Museums and Galleries of NSW Audience Development Fund, the program aims to provide innovative public programs to engage artists in the community. The works of Zoom Lens participants will be displayed at this year’s Youth Week event in April, The Area: World Tour. Expressions of interest open until 13 March.

A range of Street Art Workshops will teach participants about street art and techniques including can control, lettering and characters.
With funding from the Department of Communities and Justice under the Graffiti Management Grant, the initiative aims to prevent and minimise graffiti vandalism incidents across Canterbury-Bankstown. The first of the workshops will begin 4 April.

We’re also calling on local emerging and first-time artists with talent in performance, music, visual arts or film to participate in The Area: World Tour showcase. The collaboration with Outloud and Canterbury-Bankstown Workers with Youth Network will unveil a flair of solo artists and groups on 29 April at the Bankstown Arts Centre. Expressions of interest open until 31 March.
