The opening weekend of Lakemba Nights during Ramadan saw thousands flock to Lakemba to experience culture and exotic foods from around the world
More than 170,000 people attended from Thursday 27 February-Sunday 2 March where stallholders transformed Lakemba into a multicultural food bizarre resembling a middle eastern street market.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek attended the opening night and said the event kicked off on a high, with people travelling from all over the world to attend.
“It was a fantastic night with a great atmosphere, food and overall vibe,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“The crowds loved the experience and mingled with each other and engaged with the stallholders.
“It was great to see so many families coming out and enjoying a night out and experiencing the cultures from countries around the world.”
“I even met some people who travelled all the way from Colombia to try out our delicious dishes, and judging by what I saw, everyone was keen to sample as much as they could!”
Abdul Obeid who runs Ramadan Camels claims his stall is the most famous thing you’ll find on Haldon Street, and he said he’s got the numbers to back it up.
“On the first night, we sold 40 kilograms of camel meat—plus another 20 kilograms of deer, beef, and chicken combined,” Abdul said.
“The locals know exactly what to expect. They might swap out the lettuce or tomato, but they’re here for one thing - the camel meat!
“Now, our goal is to serve 100 kilograms of camel meat every night during the event.”
Lakemba Nights during Ramadan will run every Thursday-Sunday from 6pm-2am until Sunday 30 March.
