The City of Canterbury Bankstown has successfully secured $10 million of funding under the WestInvest Community Project Grants.

The funding is on top of $10 million committed by Council and will go towards the renewal of the Belmore and Lakemba Town Centres and Panania Library and Knowledge Centre.

In announcing the funds, Executive Director of the WestInvest Program Office, Alison Morgan, commended Council on its application and priorities.

“I wish to acknowledge the enormous effort your Team at the Council have put into the WestInvest Program,” Alison Morgan said.

“We are looking forward to working with you to deliver these great projects for the community.”

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said the funding is a great win for our City.

“It’s an opportunity to revitalise and refresh the Belmore and Lakemba Town Centres and build a new Panania Library,” Mayor Asfour said.

“When completed, the projects will be huge assets for all the community to enjoy.”

Mayor Asfour said work on the projects will begin immediately with a priority on consultation and engagement with the community.

“We have a real opportunity to transform both sites.”

It is understood some of the improvements to both Town Centres will include improved seating, outdoor dining opportunities, traffic control measures, improved footpaths, open spaces and gardens.

While the Panania Library will be rejuvenated and replaced with a new Library and Knowledge Centre.

The latest round of funds received under the WestInvest Program is on top of $24 million announced in early October.

Those funds were allocated towards building a new civic precinct in Campsie which includes a library, a community hub in Greenacre, investing towards Wran District Park, priority pedestrian links throughout the City and improvements to traffic and pedestrian safety.
