Our work experience program offers practical, real‑world experience for high school, TAFE and university students completing studies or seeking to develop new skills through hands‑on learning in our organisation.
Work experience application dates
We assess applications quarterly. You can find the closing dates in the tables below.
Participants may complete up to 12 weeks of unpaid work experience with us depending on the type of placement. This time can be spread across different days or weeks, depending on what works best for you and your supervisor.

How to apply for work experience
Submit your application using the work experience application form.
Your application must include:
• The qualification you are undertaking (if applicable)
• Your availability, including specific dates and days of the week
• The total number of placement days required
• A short explanation of the experience you’re seeking and why you’re interested in completing your placement with Council
• One nominated area of interest
• Your current CV/resume
• Documentation confirming your personal accident insurance and public liability insurance

Work experience is a voluntary and unpaid opportunity where students and community members can observe and take part in a real workplace environment. It helps you understand what happens day to day on the job, explore different careers, decide if a role or industry suits you and apply what you have learned in the classroom to real situations.
Work placement is a compulsory element of certain qualifications. Students must complete a designated number of unpaid hours in a workplace to fulfil their course requirements. These hours must be completed to attain the qualifications. This type of placement is sometimes called an unpaid internship.
To be eligible for work experience or work placement you should be one of the following :
• Currently enrolled in Year 10, 11 or 12
• Undertaking a relevant qualification through an Australian education institution (TAFE, university or Duke of Edinburgh)
• Undertaking a relevant qualification with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
• Secondary school placements must not exceed two weeks
• TAFE students, university students and recent graduates (within one year) may undertake placements of up to 12 weeks
Placements are generally completed in blocks; however, alternative arrangements may be approved to align with our operational needs and participant requirements.
Following each closing date, the Talent team reviews applications. A Talent Management Officer will consult with the relevant Unit/Department to confirm placement capacity. We may contact you if we need further information. Once we have completed the assessment process we will let you know of the outcome via email. Late applications cannot be considered.
We will tell you about the outcome within two weeks of the application's closing date.
