A new Action Plan with the potential to transform how community members walk and cycle in Canterbury-Bankstown is currently on public exhibition for residents to have a say.

The City of Canterbury Bankstown is seeking your feedback on its draft Active Transport Action Plan, which aims to deliver better interconnected walking and cycling networks to the City for the community.

“Nearly all of us walk or cycle for leisure, work or a simple means to get from A to B, and recent trends tell us that this is only going to get bigger,” Mayor Khal Asfour said.

Mayor Asfour said the growing popularity of walking and cycling will also continue to help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality within Canterbury-Bankstown.

“I’d really encourage you to make submissions on this draft Plan. Your feedback will help us turn something good into something great, and identify where we need to focus to better connect us all to one another, to public transport and to places in our community that we all love,” he said.

“You, the community, have told us you want a City that is moving and integrated, and accessible with great local destinations that have lots of ways to get there. We’re continuing to listen, and our draft Active Transport Action Plan will play a huge role in delivering infrastructure to connect our community.”

Warren Artlett, who lives in Panania and is president of Bike South West, said there has been a “hunger” to move around the City in safe and healthy ways through cycling.

He said Council’s draft Active Transport Action Plan is a reflection of how Council is interested in providing safer cycling facilities that separate cyclists from cars and trucks, while improving connectivity to neighbouring areas.

“We strongly recommend residents encourage Council to make this a reality by having a say on this Plan,” Mr Artlett said.
