Steve Smith

Steve's first class cricket credentials were established early in his career. It was in the 1981/82 season in which the hard hitting right-hand top order batsman's meteoric rise to 1st grade cricket occurred. National selection followed in 1983.

Beginnings

Steve grew up in Warwick Farm where his father, who was 1st Grade player, instructed him on the fundamentals of the game. Steve joined Bankstown in 1979 and played in the John Bull successful 3rd Grade side. This was followed by A W Green and Poidevin-Gray Shield matches, and culminating with his 1st Grade appearance 1981-82.

Achievements

A brilliant baseballer and fieldsman, plus a dynamic runner between wickets he made his mark in the one day version of the game. Steve played a total of 28 limited over matches for the Aussies with an average of 39.14 and a strike rate of 75.27..

Steve thumped a spectacular 117 against NZ in 1982-83, the same season that he helped NSW to capture the Sheffield Shield for the first time since 1965-66. His record at the first class level is outstanding with 5248 runs at an average of 35.94, including 12 centuries and 26 fifties from 155 innings in 90 matches.

Post Representation

In 1997 Steve was the fitness advisor to the Australian Test Team while they toured South Africa and England.

For several seasons he has been the strength conditioning coach to a number of teams including the Deccan Chargers and the Pune Warriors.
