Sandra Brondello

Sandy Brondello proved herself one of the finest shooters in women's basketball. Her offensive ability, especially from behind the three-point arc and strong defence made her a valuable presence on the Opals team for more than 15 years. She represented Australia at four Olympics, winning three medals: bronze in 1996 and silver in 2000 and 2004.

Beginnings

Brondello's basketball career began as a Mackay Basketball junior and progressed to Australia's Women's National Basketball League and by 1992 was named the Australian Basketball Player of the Year.

Achievements

Brondello was a member of the Opals of 1996, who claimed Australia's first medal in Olympic basketball with a famous victory over Ukraine in the Bronze medal playoff. In 1996 she was named the European Cup MVP after leading Wuppertal to the European Cup title. In addition to her MVP honours, Sandy was named a European Cup All-Star in 1994, 1996 and 1997.

Post Representation

In February 2010, Sandra was appointed head coach of the WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars.

Sandra Brondello was a member of a generation of players who took Australian women's basketball to unparalleled heights of excellence. She is more than worthy of her place in the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame.
