Ruth Everuss

In 1960 as a 16 year old, Ruth would be selected to represent Australia at the Rome Olympics in the 4 x 100M relay. She would help position Australia to win silver in the event. Ruth would continue to wear the green and gold for Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Perth in 1962 and win gold in world record time.

Beginnings

Ruth was raised and educated in the District, residing in Winspear Avenue, Bankstown. She was a member of Bankstown Swimming Club and would be taught to swim by Harold Hardwick who would instruct on Thursdays for free at the Pool. In 1955, she would begin training under Frank Jordan, at thirteen Jordan would leave and Ruth would join Don Talbot's squad.

Achievements

In 1959 at the age of 15 Ruth made first State final and finished 2nd in the Junior 200 Freestyle. In 1960 at the State Championships she won the junior 100m and open 800m.

At the 1960 National Championships in Sydney and selection trials for Rome she placed 7th in the 100 Freestyle and would be on the Australian team as a relay reserve.

Post Representation

On retirement from competitive swimming Ruth would run a successful Swim School at Auburn Swim Centre as an accredited Level 3 Swim Coach.

The Auburn Swim Centre was renamed the Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre' in her honour.
