Represented Australia in 1960 Rome Olympics
Ross was known for thriving under the pressure of big matches and was selected in the Australian team in 1960 to compete at the Olympic Games.
Beginnings
Ross, a long term resident of East Hills and Panania, started his basketball career playing for a number of teams. In his early years, he was taught about what makes a respectful sportsman and was educated by some of the best. His first team was Fort Street School and he later played for the Newtown Police Boys Club in the 1950s.
Achievements
Ross was a highlight for NSW in their 1959 campaign where he was selected to play for the senior team which competed in the Australian Championships. In 1960 he had the privilege of travelling to Bologna, Italy, to compete with some of the best players on this planet. Representing Australia in the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament has a nice ring to it, but unfortunately, the team fell short, just missing out on qualification for the Rome Olympics. Ross is also a successful bowler for Revesby Bowling Club, where his achievements include club champion and winning State Pennants Grade 3 in 2009. Ross represented NSW at the Australian Championships from 1959-1964 in basketball. He carried the Olympic Torch in the local area for the 2000 Olympics.
Post Representation
Ross was inducted into the NSW Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. After retiring with injuries from basketball, he continued his love of the game by coaching women’s teams in local competitions and now in his late 80s is an assistant coach with the City of Canterbury Bankstown walking basketball initiative.
