Robert Murray

Robert, at twenty years of age would play 1st Grade Soccer from 1939. His route to international representation would take much longer. His maturity would not surface until 1947 at the age of 28 when he would don the green and gold for Australia playing against South Africa. As his professional career receded he would become a selector and referee 1st Grade matches.

Beginnings

Robert lived in Campsie then Kirrang Avenue, Carramar (Villawood) and in 1943 became a member of the Canterbury Bankstown Soccer Football Club. He would play 1st Grade Soccer from 1939 to 1951 as a member of Canterbury/Bankstown S.C.

Achievements

From 1943 -1948 Robert would represent both Australia and NSW in the Test Series against the visiting South African (Springboks) representative Team.

As noted in the Sydney Morning Herald (2 June 1947), “that the Canterbury Bankstown Soccer Club could not secure a transfer fee of £2/10/- for its left half Bob Murray. Since then Murray has made an amazing improvement and has now been selected to represent Australia in the fourth Test against South Africa. The present transfer value of Murray is estimated to be £100 “.

Post Representation

In 1953 Robert was a selector of Bankstown 1st Grade SFC and held a 1st grade Referee's Ticket
