The City of Canterbury Bankstown’s Swim Instructor Academy, which offered free training and certification of swim instructors, was so popular when it ran three months ago that Council is offering it again. Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said Council wanted to offer more locals the opportunity to start a new career and be part of our commitment to providing aquatic education to the community. “We know the cost of training can be a barrier for some, so we’ve taken that away to enable more people to access this training which can lead to a really fulfilling career,”
“We know the cost of training can be a barrier for some, so we’ve taken that away to enable more people to access this training which can lead to a really fulfilling career,” he said.
“There is still a need for more swim school instructors, which means that those who complete the training successfully and meet the qualification requirements will find plenty of work close to home across our four Leisure and Aquatic Centres.
“This is also a really rewarding role. Being able to swim can save lives and the more kids
(and adults) we can help to learn to swim the better.”
Mayor Asfour said the flexible hours make this an appealing job for people with other commitments.
“With shifts during the day, evenings and on weekends, it’s an ideal job for people who want to work alternative hours, like stay at home parents, university and TAFE students and mature candidates,” he said.
The CBSwim Academy program is open to anyone aged 17 or older who is looking for flexible casual work.
The program includes:
- Free entry into the Royal Life Instructor Course on May 21 (including CPR);
- Working with Children Check (cost reimbursed);
- 20 hours of paid on-the-job training (normally unpaid); and
- A guaranteed job on completion at one of Council’s four Swim School venues.
