New bin day means better service

Bin collection days for most Canterbury-Bankstown residents will be shifting from 1 March.

These changes are the final stage of Council’s realignment of waste services between the former Canterbury and Bankstown Council areas.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said Council has reimagined the way we manage waste.

“We have been using the existing waste contractors and services of the former councils, but this was not working as efficiently as it could,” Mayor Asfour said.

“So, we’ve streamlined the services and brought the collections of red and yellow bins inhouse. This means we will achieve better quality and consistency in the services we provide.

“As a result of the new streamlined routes, bin collection days and times will change for around seven out of 10 households.”

The fortnightly yellow recycling and green garden bin cycle will also change for many residents, as collections are now aligned with the surrounding suburbs.

To help make this transition easier we are offering a special one-off collection of all three bins (red, yellow and green) on resident’s normal bin day in the week of the 22-26 February.

“This extra collection will ensure bins are empty and ready for the permanent changes that begin in the week of 1-5 March,” Mayor Asfour said.

Council has commenced mailing out property-specific calendars and putting stickers on red bins informing residents of their new collection days. Residents can also find their new bin day by calling
Customer Service on 9707 9000 or typing their address into the new Bin Day Finder function at cb.city/BinDayFinder

“Calendars will be arriving to residents in houses this week, so remember to stick it on the fridge or set a reminder in your diary or head to our website if you have any questions,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Please also remind your neighbours as we get closer to the date, in case they forget.”

These changes will come into effect from 1 March 2021. Until then, residents should keep putting bins out for collection as usual.

To help collections run smoothly, residents should:

  • Put their bin out the night before collection days;
  • Make sure the bin is clear from cars and at least one metre from other obstructions like trees, cars and poles; and
  • Leave at least 30 centimetres between bins, to allow the mechanical arm to pick them up.
