Stage two of the project – the missing link – will upgrade the existing pedestrian crossing and install a new shared pathway on Fore Street, for pedestrians and cyclists.
The new design will improve safety on Woolcott Street (north of Fore Street), which is part of the bike route.
A Council spokesperson said the next stage is pivotal to keep the community safe when travelling along the pathways and for better access to the Cooks River.
“Currently, cyclists and pedestrians travel along Woolcott Street in mixed-traffic conditions, which raises safety concerns for all,” they said.
“Our research into the area shows high foot traffic along the surrounding streets, so it is our top priority to keep our residents safe when exploring the parks and rivers around them.”
Council consulted with the community late last year and sought feedback about the proposed changes before finalising design plans.
Stage two of the project is funded in partnership with Transport for NSW’s Get NSW Active Program for 2023/24 and works expected to begin before the end of the year.
More information about the project will be announced on Council’s website.
