Starting his career as a defender, Milligan  spent much of his later career playing as a midfielder. 

He is currently a football expert commentator and analyst at 10 Sport. He is also currently an assistant coach for A-League men’s club, Adelaide United.

Beginnings

Mark started his grassroots football career at his local club, Birrong Sports Football Club in the Bankstown District in 1991. He quickly moved onto representative football as a junior footballer.

Achievements

Mark was accepted into the AIS in 2002 at just 16 years old. In 2005 he played in the Junior World Cup and then went on to play in four world cups in his senior career with the Socceroos, in which he was captain for the final world cup. Mark has also represented all over the world including Germany, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and in 2008 he represented Australia at the Beijing Olympic Games. Mark played for Australia including captaining the side between 2006-2019 with 80 appearances and six goals. In May 2006, he was the youngest player selected in the Australian 2006 FIFA World Cup squad. Milligan was then selected in the Australian squad for the 2007 Asian Cup. Mark competed at the FIFA World Cup in 2010, 2014 and 2018.

Post Representation

On 2 June 2021, Milligan announced that he would be retiring from football at the end of the 2020/21 season and would join the coaching staff at Macarthur.
