Mayor’s message

As we move through 2025, I’m proud of the progress we’re making across Canterbury-Bankstown to enhance our community’s spaces and services.

We’ve already completed upgrades to playgrounds at Roma Reserve, The Crest and Croydon Park, alongside new cricket nets at Graf Park.

To keep our town centres welcoming, we have increased pavement washing by nearly 60%, ensuring cleaner, safer streets for everyone.

We are also focused on removing waste from our waterways to protect our environment, including over 1,800 wheelie bins of rubbish cleared from the Cooks River each year.

These projects are just the start. Our new 2025–29 Delivery Program will see continued investment in roads, footpaths, libraries, youth services and more.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed feedback to shape this program. Your input is vital in helping us build a better Canterbury-Bankstown for all.

And as part of that vision for a more compassionate community, I’m proud to announce the return of the Mayoral Sleepout for its third year, raising funds and awareness for those experiencing homelessness.

Regards,

Mayor Bilal El-Hayek

The journey ahead

As one of the largest and fastest-growing local government areas in Australia, we know how important it is to plan carefully and act boldly.

That’s why our 2025–29 Delivery Program and 2025/26 Operational Plan is focused on building on the progress we’ve made – and planning for an even brighter, more connected future for Canterbury-Bankstown.

Over the next four years, we’ll deliver upgraded parks, libraries, sports facilities and community hubs, while also upgrading roads, footpaths and  public spaces and enhancing services to help keep our City clean.

At the same time, we’re advocating for better outcomes from the NSW Government and supporting local businesses, growing cultural events, investing in young people and embracing innovation to better serve our community.

Community satisfaction on the rise

Community satisfaction is rising as our efforts to keep town centres clean continue.

In 2024, more than 1,800 locals shared their satisfaction on the look and feel of 31 key town centres, while also identifying areas for further improvement. The result?

An overall Place Score of 3.02 out of 5 – up from 2.71 in 2023, with cleanliness ranked as the top priority for improvement.

Council is committed to building on this momentum and will continue investing funds from the Special Rate Variation to enhance the services our community values most, like keeping our City clean and tidy.

New and improved spaces

We’ve been hard at work upgrading more open spaces across our City.

We recently completed the state-of-the-art transformation of The Crest at Bass Hill, new cricket nets at Graf Park, Yagoona and upgraded playgrounds at Roma Reserve in Padstow Heights, Jim Ring Reserve in Birrong, Croydon Park in Croydon Park and Bennett Park in Narwee.

Construction is also underway on more projects, including a new BMX bike track at Milperra and play space upgrades at Ewen Park in Hurlstone Park and Austin Reserve in Picnic Point.

We’re turning up the pressure on pavement washing

We’ve expanded our pavement washing program across all key town centres in Canterbury-Bankstown – helping keep these areas cleaner and more welcoming.

Since the last schedule was developed, our community has continued to grow and thrive so we’ve changed this program to meet the current needs of our City.

  • We are cleaning more pavement: we’ve added an additional 40,803m2 of pavement that gets washed across the city, which is a 58.6% increase.
  • We are cleaning more often: we’ve added 148 additional washes each year, which is a 112.9% increase.
Love your park? Help us look after it

We know that keeping our City clean and tidy matters to you and with over 600 parks across Canterbury-Bankstown, there are a lot to care for.

We’re currently reviewing the maintenance of key local parks.

Take our quick survey to tell us about how we’re looking after your local.

Nature Strip Gardens Policy

In June, you told us what you thought of our new Nature Strip Gardens Policy, which was updated to include a new Adopt-A-Garden program.

This program allows residents to beautify their local area while supporting native flora and fauna. We’re now reviewing your feedback and will be sharing the final policy soon.
