Construction of Ewen Park’s new $3.8 million pedestrian and cycle bridge will be completed next month.

The new bridge will drastically improve the way pedestrians and cyclists share the space and will help connect the Cooks River Cycleway and surrounding areas.

City of Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said construction was on track for completion mid-November.

“What excites me the most about the new bridge is cyclists will no longer have to dismount when crossing over the Cooks River,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Its larger width and angled design also gives pedestrians greater opportunities to pause and take in the amazing views of the river.

“We’ve been able to complete this project from start to finish in just 12 short weeks, as the main structure of the bridge was actually built off-site.”

The bridge upgrade is a direct outcome of community consultation during the exhibition of the draft Ewen Park Improvement Program, which ran from November 2018 to January 2019.

As part of the program, Council will also:

• Construct an all-abilities kayak launch pad;
• Construct a new footpath made of crushed sandstone between Lang Road and Younger Avenue
• Install public artwork; and
• Landscape along the banks of the river.

Mayor Asfour said this project was just one of many improvements happening in the Ewen Park Precinct.

“As part of the Ewen Park Improvement Plan, we’re also designing an outdoor education and meeting space (which is on public exhibition until 26 October), upgrading the active and passive play spaces within the park and building a new community centre,” Mayor Asfour said.

“This precinct is being completely transformed and will be an exciting new space where people can gather, learn, play and be active.”

The Lang Road Bridge is expected to reopen on Tuesday 17 November 2020.
