Keep Connected, stay inspired - meet our local heroes

Laura Goddard is one special volunteer. Despite her home coming under threat from rising flood waters, she still managed to help others.

And her heart-warming story features in CBCity’s latest edition of Keep Connected.

Laura has volunteered for different organisations for most of her life and decided to join the Bass Hill SES Unit in mid-2021 after a previous flooding event.

“I love being able to make such a stressful situation a little bit less stressful for people,” Laura said.

During the March storms, Laura was a friendly face to her neighbours when she joined other volunteers door knocking to spread the news of potential evacuations.

What would be a dreaded knock for most, was a godsend for one local family, who was approached by Laura at the perfect time.

“When we were out door knocking the other day, I was able to assist someone who thought their father was having a stroke,” Laura said.

You’ll be able to read more of Laura’s story in this month’s edition of Keep Connected, Council’s community magazine showcasing those who’ve gone above and beyond in the community.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said this edition of Keep Connected is all about CBCity’s local champions.

“With the worst of the pandemic behind us, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life getting back to normal,” Mayor Asfour said.

“But there are so many people in our community who are doing incredible things, and I want everyone to know about them!”

This edition of Keep Connected tells some fantastic stories about those in our community.

“From a well-deserved thank you to our local SES volunteers, to our 2020 Local Woman of the Year who has released her memoir and a young swimming star set to represent us in East Africa,” Mayor Asfour said.

“I encourage everyone to sit down with their favourite cuppa and read some of the great local community stories in this magazine.”
