Janet made a major impact on the swimming scene as a twelve year old by winning the National Junior 110yds (100M) National Breaststroke title.

Beginnings

Janet was raised in the district, residing in Meredith Street, Bankstown and would attend Bankstown High School. A typical day for Janet would start at 4.55am with breakfast then the Canterbury Pool for 2 hours in the morning and then after school for another 2 hours swimming a total of 5 miles per day. At the age 12, Janet won every distance in Breaststroke from 55yards to 220 yards holding 110 yards and 220 yards Junior NSW Records and would hold the 110 yards Junior Australian Record at same age.

Achievements

In 1960 at 15 years of age Janet was selected to represent Australia at the Rome Olympics to swim 220yds (200M) Breaststroke. Jan and Kevin Berry were known as the ‘Water Babies' of the Australian Swim Team, their birthdays were two days apart.
