Powerful stories of love and hope are being shared as part of Council’s campaign to celebrate diversity and put an end to racism.

The City of Canterbury Bankstown has joined a grassroots initiative, called #RacismNotWelcome, inviting all residents to get behind the push to unite the City.

Council launched its campaign this week, by creating an online “pledge wall” to encourage participating and engagement by the community.

One of the examples already shared, reads: “Many of us fled nations broken by war. Despite this, it's the scars we've collectively healed from which brings such beauty to new life here.”

Mayor Khal Asfour said the goal of the campaign is to help us all create and embrace the positivity that comes from valuing and celebrating diversity

“We want to give everyone a shared sense of belonging as we continue uniting as one, with no place for racism in our community.”

Families across Canterbury-Bankstown are represented by some 170 different cultural backgrounds that speak more than 200 different languages.

“This makes us one of the most culturally rich and diverse neighbourhoods than anywhere else in the country, and we should all be immensely proud of that. I know I am,” Mayor Asfour said.

“I’d encourage everyone, young and old, no matter who you are or where you come from, to leave a public tribute on our pledge wall that celebrates the best part of all of
us.

“Let’s stand united to say #RacismNotWelcome.”
