Fiona Hinds

Fiona began her career in Special Olympics Sports in 1989 as a member of the Revesby Workers Activities Club which enabled her to participate in a variety of sports before deciding to concentrate on basketball. She reached the pinnacle of success with Paralympics Gold in Barcelona in 1992.

Beginnings

Fiona, a resident of Georges Hall in 1989 pursued track and field events at Narrabeen, gaining two gold and two silver medals. At a Regional swimming carnival at Roseland Fiona won two first and two second ribbons, which made her eligible to complete at State level at Tamworth where she won 5 gold and 2 silver medals. By 1990, Fiona had begun to focus on basketball. When her team played at Newcastle she gained two more silver medals, one for the game and one for skills.

Achievements

She was selected to go to Melbourne for the National Special Olympics, where all six states completed and though competition she managed to pick up a silver medal in division one individual skills and finished fourth on the team event. She was also awarded Sportsperson of the year 1990 with her name going onto the Perpetual Trophy of the Revesby Workers Club.

In July 1991 Fiona attended the Special Olympics in the U.S.A. as a member of the Australian Basketball Team and was the only Australian representative from the Sydney Western Region.

Post Representation

As a member of the Pearls, Australia's National Women's Basketball Team for Players with an Intellectual Disability, Fiona was awarded an OAM.
