City of Canterbury Bankstown will upgrade a dangerous hair-pin bend which claimed the life of a motorcyclist a few months ago.

Locals raised further concerns about the notorious blind spot off Henry Lawson Drive at Picnic Point after the fatality and demanded action.

The $500,000 project, jointly funded by Transport for NSW, will improve road safety and visibility for all motorists and residents using the access road.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said he had listened to the concerns of locals.

“We’ve heard of countless incidents of motorists flying around this hair-pin with complete disregard for the safety of other motorists and the residents living alongside the road,” Mayor Asfour said.

“One life lost, is one too many – it’s only a matter of time before another incident occurs.

“As part of this road improvement work, Council aims to widen the intersection of the adjoining service road at 901-921 Henry Lawson Drive with new kerb and gutter

“The project will also include earthwork excavation in front of 909A Henry Lawson Dr to lower the existing terrain and improve visibility for residents to safely enter and exit the road.

“Council has been aware of this issue and we are finally able to undertake these works thanks to the support of State Government.”

Mayor Khal Asfour said the man had tragically lost his life earlier this year, when his motorcycle collided with a four-wheel drive.

The work is expected to begin before Christmas and be completed early 2021.
