Bruce created an early impact on National Cycling when at 17 years of age he was selected to ride for Australia in the World Junior Championships in France. Keech won numerous state and national titles. At 21 years he would wear the green and gold for Australia at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and the Auckland Commonwealth Games in 1990.

Beginnings
Bruce was educated at Revesby Primary and Sir Joseph Banks High School and won a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport. In 1981, he joined the Bankstown Sports Club.Bruce would come second in the National Titles Juvenile 25m road team time trial (33m.40.02s) and would attend the World Titles and contest the junior 70km road team time trial (1h 33m.04.s) in 1982.
Achievements
It was at the at new Olympic-standard cycling track the Canterbury Velodrome that Bruce would hone his talent on Wednesday nights of racing.
