Australia Day your way

“With so much on our door step, let's celebrate all that is Canterbury-Bankstown this Australia Day!”

“With so much on our door step, let’s celebrate all that is Canterbury-Bankstown this Australia Day!”

Mayor Khal Asfour is encouraging residents to make the most of this year’s national day by staying local and being COVID safe.

“Whether it’s a dip in the pool, a game of cricket or a backyard barbecue, there are lots of options for you to do Australia Day your way this year,” Mayor Asfour said.

“If you are planning to celebrate outdoors, there are so many open spaces in Canterbury-Bankstown to choose from – complete with barbecues, amenities and playgrounds for all abilities.

“Let’s not let this pandemic put a dampener on our Australian spirit.”

Council has planned a number of COVID-Safe pop-up activities at several local parks, pools and town centres for residents who’ll be out and about in the City on 26 January.

  • Catch some tunes at our Aussie Rock Truck at selected sites.

  • Meet our lovable Aussie roving characters, such as Lifeguards on stilts and jumping kangaroos.

  • Grab a FREE ice cream.

  • Follow our Australia Day art trail with five art installations to see.

  • Show us how you celebrate Australia Day to WIN 1 of 25 apron BBQ kits, by post your photos on social media using #WhereInterestingHappens and tagging @OurCBCity.

  • Keep a look out in the sky to see Australian flag parachutes to top off a fun-filled day.

Mayor Khal Asfour said celebrating Australia Day means something different to every one of our residents.

“Whether you were born here, recently settled here, or been living here for a little while now, we’re all so lucky to call this country home,” Mayor Asfour said.

“I truly believe no one celebrates Australia Day quite as powerfully as Canterbury-Bankstown.

“We are one of the most diverse cities in the country; a vibrant mosaic of many different nationalities, customs, traditions, languages and religions.”

At 9.30am on 26 January, Mayor Asfour and Australia Day ambassador John Stanley will also announce the 2021 Australia Day Award recipients and swear in 20 new citizens during a ceremony, which will be live streamed on Council’s Facebook Page.
