Arthur won selection for NSW in 1945 and would represent Australia in 1946 against New Zealand at Dunedin. He became a member of the celebrated 1947-48 Wallabies team.
Arthur's contribution as a crash-tackling lock forward whose speed matched his fearlessness was regarded as one of the main reasons why the 1948 Wallabies did not have their line crossed in any of four internationals in Britain.

Beginnings
Arthur was Bankstown born and bred in the house that his father built in Stacey Street, Bankstown. He would reside there until 1950. Arthur attended Bankstown Public School and Sydney Technical High School.
Arthur played Club Level Rugby Union from 1944 to 1949 and was also member of the Cronulla S.L.D.C. Surf Boat Crew that would come 3rd in the Australian Surf Championships and 1st in the NSW Championships 1943-44 Season.
Achievements
Australia won four of the six Tests in which Arthur appeared and he had eight games for NSW, six against Queensland and two against New Zealand In 1949 Arthur retired from top level rugby. The NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association would name the Under 15's Rugby Union Knockout Competition the Arthur Buchan Shield in his honour.
Post Representation
Arthur outstanding sporting success would be matched academically, taking his B.Sc. at Sydney University in 1945. He would be become a Science teacher, and in due course spend time at East Hills Boys High School as their Science Master and by 1977 would achieve the position of Deputy Director General of Education.
