A war memorial honouring local service men and women has been restored to its former glory.

Mayor Khal Asfour said Roselands War Memorial, built in 1967, is dedicated to those who “have helped to preserve the security and freedom of Australia”.

“This is a grand memorial, which has stood the test of time, and will continue to do so for many more years to come,” Mayor Asfour said.

“It’s only fitting that this upgrade has been completed in time for Remembrance Day.”

The $20,000 upgrade was jointly funded by the City of Canterbury Bankstown and NSW Government under its Community War Memorials Fund.

Lakemba RSL Sub Branch secretary Tim McCaw said his club and Kingsgrove RSL had endorsed the grant funding for this project.

“I was pleased to find out this memorial was to be upgraded,” Mr McCaw said.

“A lot of them are getting quite old, so it is very good to see Council and the state government, branches of the RSL, working together to restore these memorials to remember all those who have served.”

The upgrade of Roselands War Memorial included:

• Resurfacing the podium;
• Repainting the spire;
• Cleaning and regrouting the bricks and sandstone;
• Cleaning and polishing the memorial plaques; and
• Relandscaping the garden bed in front of the memorial.

To commemorate Remembrance Day, Mayor Asfour will attend a service and lay a wreath at Lakemba RSL Sub Branch at 11am today.

“While today commemorates the end of World War I, which claimed millions of lives,” Mayor Asfour said, “It is also a time to reflect on the sacrifices of the young men and women who have served this country in subsequent wars, conflicts and emergency actions.
