Traffic Management
Raised pavement markers
Purpose
- Used to increase visibility and improve awareness of adjacent road line markings, traffic devices and road side items
- Provide day and night visibility during adverse weather conditions
- Provide noise and audible warning for vehicles when crossed
- Improve road safety by providing directional cues for motorists along path of travel
Different types of Raised Pavement Markers
- Used to divide centre of the road and outline painted medians
- Used with line marking that divides parking spaces on the left hand side of road and the travel lane
- Used to divide all road lane lines
- To identify locations of existing fire hydrants on the side of the road for the fire brigade

Road humps
Purpose
- Reduce vehicle speeds by causing discomfort when vehicles are driving in excess of the design speed of the hump
Traffic islands
Purpose
- Channelization of vehicles and reduce speeds by narrowing the width of the road
Chicanes/Slow Points
Purpose
- Slow points are mid-block traffic islands that narrow the roadway to break-up the continuity of the street to reduce vehicle speeds
Roundabouts
Purpose
- Roundabouts reduce vehicle speeds, conflicts and simplifies the allocation of priorities for vehicle movement.
Pedestrian crossings
Purpose
- A device that enables a point where pedestrians can cross the road and have priority over vehicles on the roadway. A pedestrian crossing imposes a legal requirement on vehicular traffic to give way to pedestrians and improves safety for pedestrians
Pedestrian refuge islands
Purpose
- Refuge islands are used where there is a need to provide a place of safety for a concentration of pedestrians in circumstances where it is difficult to cross the full width of a roadway in one stage.
Traffic Lights
Purpose
- To facilitate the safe and efficient movement of vehicles on roads that have high traffic flow and to prevent conflict between the movements
- To facilitate pedestrian movements on roads that have high traffic flow
Light Thoroughfare Roads
Purpose
- To improve local amenity of the street by restricting heavy vehicle access
- To prevent the use of trucks using streets as short-cut routes to main roads
- To prevent damage to and ensure good condition of the road
