John established his sporting credentials early, as a 16 year old when he would become NSW State Champion in 1966. John went on to win the Australian Flyweight Championship in 1968, 1972 and 1975. John was selected to represent Australia at two Olympic Games, in Mexico in 1968 and in Munich in 1972. John wore the green and gold again while representing Australia at the World Championships in Istanbul in 1974.

Beginnings
John resideded in the district in Lakemba Street, Lakemba and competed for Bankstown Police Citizens Youth Club.
Achievements
John was the first aboriginal to represent Australia at Wrestling and he competed at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics.
Post Representation
After retirement John maintained his association with the sport and the Police and Community Youth Clubs as a coach at the Mt Druitt PCYC in Sydney and as the State Coach at Homebush Sports Centre. John is a member of the Aboriginal and Islander Sports Hall of Fame
