John Byrom

John became the Australian Champion for 110yds (100M) Backstroke as a 15 year old in 1962 and held the title until 1965. He was a member of the Australian Swim Team in 1963 that would tour London, Europe and Moscow. John was also selected to represent Australia at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games as a 17 year old and would reach the Semi Finals in the 100M Backstroke.

Beginnings

John was born and educated in the district, residing in Lambeth Street Panania until his marriage in 1972. John would attend Panania Public School and East Hills Boys High School. From 1957 to 1963 he was a member of the Bankstown Amateur Swimming Club and he would follow Coach Don Talbot to Auburn Pool. John was also a member of North Cronulla Surf Life Saving.

Achievements

John was Australian Champion for the 110 yds Backstroke from 1962 through to 1965. He was supported in his Olympic efforts by Panania East Hills R.S.L. Club.

Post Representation

John's swimming career was halted prematurely in 1967 when he was called up for National Service and did a tour of duty in Vietnam 1968.
