Beginnings
Ian, who lived in the Mount Lewis area for an extended period of time, began his soccer administration career in 1973 as the secretary of the Belmore Police Boys Soccer Club. His early roles included serving as the president of the Canterbury & District Soccer Football Association from 1975 to 1977 and later as secretary of the same association from 1978 to 1980. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the NSW Amateur Soccer Federation from 1979 to 1980.
Achievements
Ian was the senior vice president of the Canterbury & District Soccer Football Association and the NSW Amateur Soccer Federation in 1981. His leadership roles continued as he served as the president of the NSW Amateur Soccer Federation from 1982 to 1987 and as a director for the NSW Soccer Federation from 1985 to 1987. He later became the general manager of the NSW Soccer Federation from 1987 to 1991. Ian played a key role as the project manager for the 1993 FIFA World Youth Cup in 1991 and held multiple roles, including director, chief executive officer, and general secretary of the Australian Soccer Federation from 1991 to 1995. He also served as chief executive officer of NSW Wheelchair Sports and participated in the Organising Committee for the World Wheelchair Championships. His subsequent roles included general manager positions at both the NSW Amateur Soccer Federation and Soccer Australia, and chief executive officer of Hockey NSW.
Post Representation
Ian's post-representation career saw him returning to the Canterbury & District Soccer Football Association, where he served as president from 2012 to 2014 and as chief executive officer from 2014 to 2022. From 2023 to 2024, he continued his involvement as a director of the Canterbury & District Soccer Football Association. His contributions have been recognised with several honours, including life memberships in the Canterbury & District Soccer Football Association and Football NSW, the George Churchward Medal in 2016, the Vince & Val Laws Medal in 2019 and induction into the Football Canterbury Hall of Fame in 2022.
